Die großen Vorbilder der Finnen MACHINA sind nach eigener Aussage Judas Priest, aber das hört man auf der Sechs-Track-Debüt-EP 'Dark Age Digital' wirklich nicht unbedingt. Das Heimatland des jungen Quintetts scheint dagegen sehr wohl durch. Will meinen: Stratovarius und Sonata Arctica sind hier nicht besonders weit entfernt, auch wenn die Maschinenköppe vor allem im Vergleich zur stark abbauenden Tolkki-Konkurrenz tonnenweise mehr Frische versprühen. Dazu gibt's einen latent vorherrschenden Alt-Skandinavien-Touch, was vor allem eine gemäßigtere Melo-Metal-Nummer wie 'Absence Of Light' immer wieder in die Schublade von Acts wie Silver Mountain oder Pretty Maids drückt - das Ganze versehen mit moderneren Masterplan-&-Co.-Vibes. Der Hauptunterschied zur Konkurrenz liegt aber vor allem in der enormen Hitdichte, die das komplette halbe Dutzend Songs zum Anspieltipp adelt und MACHINA schon heute in ihrem Bereich zu einer absolut herausragenden Band macht. Ein absolutes Muss für Genre-Fans!

Wie stark die finnische Metal Szene momentan ist sieht man auch an Machina, die aus dem Stehgreif mit einer 6 Track Scheibe zur Stelle sind, die jeden Fan der älteren Stratovarius aber auch Sonata Arctica zur Raserei treiben dürfte! Über die tollen Midtempostücke 'A Light In The Dark' & 'Absence Of Light' bis hin zu grandiosen Melodic Speed Hämmern der Marke 'Against The Time' oder 'War Is Alive' sind Songs vertreten die den bereits angeführten Acts in nichts(!) nachstehen; da bleibt einem glatt die Spucke weg! Mit Sänger Sami hat man einen Frontmann der in punkto Stimmvolumen und Ausdruckskraft auf ganzer Linie überzeugen kann, und mich oftmals an den neuen Vokalisten der Michael Schenker Group, Jari Tiura (ex-Snakegod) erinnert. Wenn das mal kein Kompliment ist. Doch auch die Instrumentalisten und das zweifellos große Talent in punkto Songwriting/Killer-Refrains könnten Machina schon bald in eine Liga mit der Genre-Spitze katapultieren. Großartig!

Dass im Info der finnischen MACHINA der Metal von Judas Priest der Jahre 1978 bis 1984 angegeben wird, macht schon mal einen Mordsappetit auf 'Dark Age Digital'. Zum Tragen kommt dieser Einfluss aber dann doch weniger als angenommen, aber das macht gar nichts, denn MACHINA agieren mit ihrem hochmelodiösen Power Metal sehr eigenständig und können bereits mit dem Opener 'A Light In The Dark' - sehr eingängig und mit einer genialen Melodie gesegnet – sowie dem etwas schnelleren 'Against The Time', das a bisserl Gamma Ray und Stratovarius durchschimmern lässt, schon viele Pluspunkte einfahren. Auch 'Absence Of Light' besticht durch einen fantastischen Groove und unheimlich viel Gefühl, vor allem aber die Stimme von Sami jagt einem ein ums andere mal einen wohligen Schauer über den Rücken. Diese Songs machen so dermaßen süchtig, dass man das für Ende 2006 / Anfang 2007 angekündigte erste komplette Album gar nicht mehr abwarten kann. Okay, Stratovarius und auch die Pretty Maids sind schon irgendwie immer allgegenwärtig, besonders zu hören in 'Machinery' und auch dem abschließenden 'The Menace', aber auch die anfangs erwähnten 'frühen' Judas Priest hinterlassen bei MACHINA ihre Spuren. Als mir diese CD auf den Tisch flattert und ich den Bandnamen, den Albumtitel und das kalte, technische, blaue Artwork sehe, rechne ich schon mit etwas, das mich mehr oder minder an FEAR FACTORY erinnern würde. Doch falscher könnte die Erwartung kaum sein. Schon das erste Riff des bemerkenswert eingängigen Openers 'A Light In The Dark' macht klar, dass sich das finnische Quintett dem traditionellen Metal verschrieben hat und dabei seinen Schwerpunkt auf tolle Gitarrenharmonien, melodische Riffs und schön ausgearbeitete Leadpassagen legt. Spielerisch wirkt das Ganze oftmals durchaus leicht progressiv, wobei MACHINA durch weitgehend eher kurze und stringent durchkomponierte Stück strukturell durchaus direkt agieren und so dem Hörer den Einstieg in ihre Musik sehr leicht machen. Dennoch sind die Stücke griffig und haben genug Tiefgang, um zu vermeiden, dass sie ihren Reiz schnell verlieren.
Das gelingt der Band hervorragend, und so ist es ganz egal, ob wir das schnelle 'Against The Time' oder das epischere und ruhigere 'Absence Of Light' heranziehen. Alle Songs haben prägnante Hooks und eingängige Refrains, die vom Sänger wirklich super rübergebracht werden, und machen auch beim zehnten Durchlauf noch so viel Spaß wie zu Beginn. Bei 'War Is Alive' geht's richtig flott und mitreißend zur Sache, bevor uns 'Machinery' wieder progressiver und vielschichtiger begegnet. Das abschließende 'The Manace' geht dann ein wenig in die Richtung melodischen Speed Metals, verzichtet aber zum Glück gekonnt auf sämtliche Überbetonungen der in diesem Genre üblichen Klischees.
Die Band selbst nennt die klassischen JUDAS PRIEST-Sachen als Haupteinfluss, was auch hier und da deutlich durchschimmert, doch allgemein sind es eher die jeweils neueren JAG PANZER und IRON MAIDEN, die ich als Referenz anführen würde, wenn es darum geht herauszufinden, womit MACHINA denn zu vergleichen sind, und das ist zu hundert Prozent als großes Kompliment gemeint. Dabei sind die Finnen aber wie gesagt straighter und weniger ausufernd als die beiden letztgenannten Acts. Die Produktion und Aufmachung dieser Eigenpressung lassen keine Wünsche offen, so dass die Band mit 'Dark Age Digital' noch im Dezember zu einem der für mich vielversprechendsten Newcomer des Jahres 2005 avancieren kann. Auf der Heimseite könnt ihr euch Samples anhören und die Scheibe auch direkt für sieben Euro ordern. Ein vollständiges Album soll nächstes Jahr folgen. Ich freu mich drauf.

I have reviewed more bands from the Finnish city Oulu in the past, but this MACHINE seems to be one of the strongest acts. Their mini-debut CD 'Dark age digital' was released in 2004 and sounds like a typical European Melodic (Power) Heavy Rock/Metal record, sitting somewhere between EDGUY, STRATOVARIUS and AXXIS. The band has a very good lead singer, who easily is able to reach the higher notes. 6 tracks are included, mostly between 3 and 4 minutes in length, very song based, so a catchy chorus here and a strong hook there. Opener 'A light in the dark' is a very good melodic heavy rocker like EDGUY meets AXXIS. Next track 'Against the time' is much faster and fits nicely in the fast Melodic Power Metal style of STRATOVARIUS and THUNDERSTONE. Although instrumental very much like HIM, the song 'Absence of light' is yet another melodic heavy rocker that almost has a TNT kinda approach. Up next is 'War is alive', a nice uptempo Melodic Metal song with a PRIEST type of sound, although the chorus is very melodic. 'Machinery' follows and is another superstrong melodic heavy rocker. Closing track is 'The menace', a faster Power Metal song in typical Italo style. Concluded, a very impressive debut CD of MACHINA and probably this year it will see a follow-up in the form of a new full-length CD. From Finland, the land of the thousand lakes, and so many metal bands that they even have metal in the charts, we received once more a demo. But this one proved to be different, as the band announces in the demo that they were heavily influenced by Judas Priest, yet wish to stay away from the category 'copy-cat'. Well, in that mission they have succeeded, but nevertheless this new outfit can be recognized as a Finnish metal act within only a few seconds. This band fits in very nice with bands like Thunderstone, or less known acts such as Requiem and Excalion. I guess that the most Priest-like things are the use of two guitars, as little as possible keyboards (although, what a Finnish metal act be without any single keyboard line, haha), and the band name (perhaps a small reference to 'Killing Machine'?).
The Priest-element is a bit easier to recognize on the opening of up-tempo 'War is Alive', listen to the riffing: it is just that with this vocalist they will always sound Finnish. And speaking about British legends; 'Machinery' does not remind me so much of Priest, yet more of Saxon! But having said that, when the band puts the pedal to the metal, they sound definitely Finnish, just listen to 'Against The Time' and closing 'The Menace', where the vocals are a bit Italian operette-like. 'A Light in the Dark' reminds me a lot of Thunderstone, and also 'Absence of Light' is typically Finnish epic melodic metal, just without that overload of neo-classical solos so many bands like to display; this band sticks to the good old style, and there is nothing wrong with that!
The demo can be ordered throughout the band's website for € 7,00 or $ 7,00. Although the band still has to grow to get to the high level of Finnish melodic metal bands, they certainly have possibilities, in Finland, but perhaps also in Germany or the Southern regions of Europe. Only time will tell.

It seems like more and more great bands come out of the icy climate of Finland. This time around we get Machina, a comprehensive power prog act that combines the sounds of Stratovarius, Thunderstone, and Voice into an effective and rousing display of musical vision and art.
'Dark Age Digital' is the band's first recording to date, a six song journey that really focuses on more of a well rounded power metal approach. Obviously the fast, speedy set is firmly in place, but along the way comes tons of hook and melodic vocal lines that serve as fuel for the fire. At times I can hear the Finland sound, almost as if the guitar licks found throughout are just cold enough to encourage that troop of Sentenced/Amorphis vagabonds. However the end result is enough power and prog to satisfy fans of Kamelot, Royal Hunt, and most comparable...Voice.

Yes, Machina is from Finland and yes it is a melodic metal band, but Machina is worth looking at. The band was formed with the stated intention of sounding like vintage Judas Priest, although here the style has little to do directly with Priest and is closer to Stratovarius albeit without (much) keyboards. The music has little to do with Fear Factory either despite the title or the cover art. The singer is capable of hitting the notes he reaches for and proves it by his performance on Absence Of light, the music is charming and the production professional. My favourite song is The Menace which has a great solo, although fans of Stratovarius, Sentenced and Freedom Call will generally like these six songs. Machina is pure metal with epic melodies and a definitive Yngwie Malmsteen/ Stratovarius feeling. Here we have fast guitar runs and virtuoso guitar solos that make the listening really enjoyable. Machina also has a really tight rhythm section with interesting double bass drumming. The melodies here are essential in order to give the spirit and soul to each composition adding power and melancholy wherever is needed but always giving a memorable line for the listener. One of the highest points here are the vocal harmonies that create memorable moments through this recording. The recording has really good sound, specially on the loud guitars that are the centre of Machina´s music. Pure metal with good songs.

When this popped through the letterbox (ok, carried on the head of a naked Filipino maiden across the marble floor of Metal4Life Mansion) I took one look at the name of the band, the title of the album, and the cover art, and thought 'Fear Factory rip off, how 1990's'. Which highlights two thing. One, reviewers are shallow human beings, content to leap to ill considered conclusions while concentrating on baser matters, such as naked Filipino maidens. Two, appearances can be deceiving. Now I realise that many are reassured at the thought of my omnipotence, but I've been taking the blue pills and they seem to be working.
So what is a Machina? They're a Finnish power metal band who were founded at the altar of classic Judas Priest. They also win a coveted prize for a rare burst of musicianly honesty saying 'we're neither trend followers nor trying to create something new'. Finally, a band you can believe.
And this is a very good mini-album. There may only be six tracks, but there's minimal filler (insert all killer pun here). The band are uniformly excellent, the (self) production is fullsome, and with a few rough edges taken care of, there's no reason why a future of middle billing on the European metal festival circuit shouldn't await them.
Best tracks - the opening, mid-tempo groove 'A Light In The Dark' and the power ballad 'Absence Of Light'. Skip moment - 'Machinery', the only song going nowhere.

Finnish melodic heavy power metal would be my first reaction to Dark Age Digital. I can be short about this debut album from the Finnish blokes of Machina. The album starts fairly ok with the song called A Light In The Dark. We're treated to lots of guitar, a catchy chorus, melodic riffs and a typical heavy metal voice; actually quite a standard song. I can really enjoy your typical average metal IF performed nicely, but this track didn't convince me.
Its successor did however. Against the Time shows us what Machina can do; a fresh, fast song featuring cool riffs, fast drumwork and quite good vocal work. This is one of those songs where you suddenly notice that you're stomping along with the rhythm. Somehow I just get a good feeling with this track.
An overall note about the album: It all sounds really well, the production is great (thanks for the work at Tico-Tico studios) This album is another of those great sounding, non-original albums. The songs are good, the melodies are nice and catchy and the atmosphere is there. Luckily the band is not out to be the most original band of the world, I quote the info-sheet 'We're neither trend followers nor trying to create something really new under the sun. Good melodies are the thing we trust and rely on.' And there goes a band with a good goal and a good portion of self-consciousness. Finland, dix points! (although the disc is fairly short clocking around twenty minutes). The preparations for the full-length successor are on the way, so I won't be harsh about the length this time.
Further on the disc we keep finding the neat, correct and solid heavy metal tracks. The slick sound is great if you don't mind it (then again, that goes for absolutely anything doesn't it?). Some people might be bored by the averageness of the genre (some people are already bored when they hear the word powermetal). If you don't mind hearing inspired, tight and well played power/heavy metal then this one is for you. If you're not into power metal at all don't make this your first one.

Two years ago Machina released their debut mini CD which included six tracks and almost twenty minutes of pure heavy / power metal music. The title of this record is 'Dark Age Digital' and from the opening track you will get the point of heavy metal.
The band had written some interesting compositions which are also well developed but they have chosen a kind of metal that we have a lot of bands playing this style, so it is more difficult to be unique. Of course every band have their own sound but some bands have more similarities with some other bands.
Anyway, while i had the chance to hear the music from Machina, i found some really impressive ideas inside their songs but also some times i found some too typical moments. I am sure if the band will continue to work hard then we will have some better results. Because i know that now Machina prepares their debut album, i am sure that their sound will be more mature.

Vahvojen melodioiden sävyttämää metallia soittava Machina on omakustanteena julkaissut debyytti-MCD:n joka on nimetty Dark Age Digitaliksi.
Machina on bändinä nuori, mutta soittajilla on bändikokemusta huomattavasti muista projekteista. Machinan vahvimpana vaikuttajana on ollut 78-84 vuosien Judas Priestin hengessä tehty musiikki, mutta kopioimiseen bändi ei syyllisty, näitä vaikutteita hyväksikäyttäen Machina on päivittänyt musiikkinsa tälle vuosituhannelle. Bändistä huokuu vuosien soittokokemuksen tuoma varmuus ja biisien sävellystaito. Biisit ovat sävellyksiltään nerokkaita, kappaleiden melodiat ja rakenteet kuulostavat omaperäisiltä, vaikka vaikuttajabändien henki leijuu kokoajan kappaleiden yläpuolella. Levyn soundipoliitiikka on kohdallaan, Ahti Kortelaisen johdolla Tico Tico -studiossa on syntynyt bändin musikaalista linjaa tukeva äänimaisema.
Harmi ettei saatekirjeestä tai levyn kansiteksteistä löytynyt soittajatietoja, mutta uskon että Machinan soittajat ovat suomalaisen metallimusiikin pitkäaikaisia raatajia, koska homma on niin ammattimaisissa käsissä kaikilla osa-alueilla. Tuotoksen eteen on nähty paljon vaivaa, esim. Minilevyn kansitaide on syntynyt Ilpo Koskelan toimesta GST -graafisella studiolla. Bändin nokkamies Marko Kinnunen voi olla tyytyväinen hengentuotteeseensa.
Mieltäni lämmitti myös erilliseltä bonuslevyltä löytyvä, hyvältä kuulostava Accept -coverointi Breaker joka nauhoitettiin samoissa Dark Age Digitalin sessioissa.

Oululainen Machina on syntynyt bändin jäsenten muiden projektien ohessa, ja uuden yhtyeen ohjenuorana oli päästä tekemään 70- ja 80-lukujen taitteen Judas Priestin tyyppistä metallia. Bändiä on kypsytelty pikkuhiljaa, ja matkan varrella Priest-vaikutteet ovat karisseet pois ja antaneet tilaa yhtyeen omaleimaiselle melodiselle perusheville.
Sanomattakin lienee selvää, että soittajina ja laulajina yhtyeen jäsenet ovat erinomaisia. Varsinkin solistin puhdas, vahva ja soinnikas ääni kuulostaa hienolta ja äänivarojensa puolesta mies kuuluu suomalaisten metallilaulajien parhaimmistoon.
Siihen Judas Priestiin verrattuna Machina ei ole aivan yhtä raskas, mitä ei pidä ymmärtää moitteena. Machinan etuna on se, että bändi lupaa heti ensimmäisillä tahdeilla laadukasta ja toimivaa heviä, lupaus myös lunastetaan ja laadusta pidetään kiinni kaikilla rintamilla loppuun saakka. Ja vaikka Machina tunnustaa kasarivaikutteita, bändi ei suinkaan ole jäänyt menneeseen, vaan yhtye hyödyntää soveltuvin osin muitakin vivahteita. Ehkäpä kysymys onkin pikemminkin oman työn analyyttisestä arvioinnista, kun helmet on saatu näin hyvään järjestykseen.

Oululainen Machina on pitkällisen hiomisen jälkeen pullauttanut ulos kuuden biisin omakustanteen. Bändi tekee 80-lukuista heviä ja hardrockia tyylikkäästi. Vaikka yhtyeen lähtökohtana on joskus ollut 'aito' Judas Priest jostain 20-25 vuoden takaa, ei Priestiä synkällä digitaaliajalla ole jäljellä enää kuin ripaus.
Soitto- ja soundipuoli on Machinalla kohdallaan kuten odottaa sopii, sillä ovathan muusikotkin jo kolmenkympin huitavilla. Mitään uutta ei Dark Age Digitalilla tietenkään kuulla, vaan eipä hyvin sävellettyä, vanhakantaista melodista metallia Suomessa liikaa tehdä. Epäselväksi jäi, minkälaisia intohimoja Oulun sälleillä on musiikkinsa suhteen. Eväitä riittää muuhunkin kuin harrastustoimintaan, se on selvä.

Dark Age Digital ei ole mitään koneiden ja digitaalisuuden riemujuhlaa, vaan rehellistä melodista power metalia, joka huokuu niin Helloweenia kuin hard rockiakin. Bändin selvin valtti onkin tyylikäs tasapainottelu nopeampien juoksutusten ja rauhallisemman menon välillä, mikä ei luo kuvaa tasapaksusta melodiapuurosta, vaan muuntautumiskykyisestä yhtyeestä, jolla on sävellyskynä hallussa. Myös laulajalla on äänessään tunnetta ja kantavuutta, mutta jokin miehen lausumisessa jää vaivaamaan. Soundeista on vastannut A.Kortelainen ja Tico-Tico, joten puitteet Machinan kaltaiselle metallisoinnille ovat kunnossa. Vallan loistavaa.

Masiina hätkähdyttää taitavuudellaan. Perussettiä sinänsä, tukutukupowerin ja perinteisen hardrockin plantaaseilla on lukemattoman moni muukin kyntänyt. Yleensähän näitä ei erota toisistaan, mutta Machinan biisimateriaali on huomattavan tasokasta. Etten sanoisi helvetin hyvää!
Skenen touhuihin kyllästyneenäkin tätä palaa kuuntelemaan mieluusti uudestaankin. Soitto ja sovituspuolikin toimii kuin lubrikoitu, samoin vokalistin ääni on lajille vaadittavien kriteereiden lisäksi hienon persoonallinen.
Tästä siirrymme sopivasti ainoaan kompastuskiveen, nimittäin taas kerran siihen englannin lausuntaan. Näin selkeän ja kauniin performanssin sotkeminen väärin ääntämisellä tuntuu paikoin jo rikokselta. Ette kuitenkaan ole mitään pääministereitä, ettekä aja ralliakaan? Jotenkin olettaisin että asiaa pystyy harjoittelemaan ja minä totta vie moista suosittelisin. Jollei, niin vaihto täkäläisittäin kaupallisempaankin esityskieleen ja bändin nimi uusiksi. Toimisiko Miekka? Olisi meinaan kovempi kuin Kilpi.

En tiedä yhtyeestä mitään...joten omakustanteen kolahtaessa postilaatikkooni ja paketin avattuani; 'hmmm..jännät kannet... suppose some kinda futuristic...' -WRONG!! Totta puhuen demo omaa hämäävimmät kannet aikoihin. Machina nimittäin pohjaa laukkansa konstailematta vanhanliiton heviin.
Hämmennykseni on tosiaan suuri, sillä uskomukseni mukaan ei pyörää olekkaan tarkoitus keksiä uudestaan. Silti mukana ovat kaikki jo soitetut koukut, soolot, kiljaisut...ei helvetti... YUP:ta lainatakseni 'helppoa kuunneltavaa'. Siis, onhan tässä tuplabasarii, menoo ja melskettä. Tämä ei vaan enää yllätä. Karu totuus vain on että peruselementeistä kasatun musiikin tulisi sisältää jotain omaa ja outoa..tuoretta, jotta Eerola kiinnostuisi...muuthan tästä tykkää kuin hullu puurosta. Ihmehhän ei tosin olisi jos Machinakin kohtapuoliin signattaisiin saksalaiselle hölkkälafkalle. tukutukutukulampaitani...!!
Kannet on hienot. Soundit potkii. Niistä ei ole kuitenkaan pelastajaksi kun sieluton yleisilme ei nosta karvaakaan pystyyn. Arvostelija kuittaa ja toteaa kirjoittaneensa paskimman arvionsa aikoihin... Machina hämmentää.. huonolla tapaa.
