Mit ihrer Debüt-EP haben MACHINA aus Finnland in eurem monatlichen Lieblingsmagazin seinerzeit die Adelung zum ”Demo des Monats” erfahren, dem folgenden Longplayer verpasste der damalige Rezensent im Jahr 2009 acht Punkte. Dass die Finnen neuerdings wieder in der Demo/Eigenproduktionen-Ecke stattfinden, hat einen einfachen Grund: Nach der Auflösung von Shark Records hat sich der Sechser entschieden, ”Hellbound Heart” in Eigenregie zu veröffentlichen. Der Qualität der Mucke tut das freilich keinen Abbruch, die Platte ist professionell produziert und kann ohne Weiteres mit internationalen Standards mithalten. MACHINA zocken Power Metal in bester Tradition von Stratovarius, The Dogma und Sonata Arctica, wahren sich aber das benötigte Quäntchen Eigenständigkeit, um nicht als reine Kopisten durchzugehen, und machen durchweg eine gute Figur. Nima : Mijn eerste kennismaking met deze Finnen was middels hun debuut EP, ‘Dark Age Digital’, tien jaar geleden. In de afgelopen decennia is de band bij mij in vergetelheid geraakt. De eerste langspeler, ‘Magestic Machination’ uit 2009, heb ik dan ook niet meegekregen.
Op ‘Dark Age Digital’ lieten de heren zeker potentie horen, maar de melodieuze heavy/power metal was totaal gezichtsloos, waardoor de band niet echt opviel. Zoals gezegd heb ik het debuut niet gehoord, maar ‘Hellbound Heart’ laat in ieder geval een flinke stap vooruit zien. Okay, de muziek is nog altijd vrij standaard, maar minder cliché. Ook op het gebied van songwriting hebben de heren absoluut vooruitgang geboekt, en laten meer een eigen aanpak zien. Het gros van het materiaal is mid-tempo en nogal bombastisch, en bij vlagen progressief, maar de nummer bevatten de nodige afwisseling om van begin tot eind de aandacht vast te houden. Dit in tegenstelling tot de eerdergenoemde EP, waarbij de muziek regelmatig inzakte. De relatief korte speeltijd van 35 minuten helpt daar uiteraard ook aan mee. Daarnaast is vocalist Sami Huotari tegenwoordig van een heel ander kaliber. De man zingt met houvast, zelfverzekerdheid, kracht en komt erg overtuigend over. De productie is tot slot tiptop en goed gebalanceerd, waardoor het geheel goed tot zijn recht komt. Alles bij elkaar is ‘Hellbound Heart’ een goede melodieuze progressieve power metal plaat die fans van bands zoals Stratovarius, Evergrey, Sonata Arctica, Invictus, Labyrinth en consoorten zeker zal aanspreken.

Jo kymmenen vuoden ja parin virallisen julkaisun verran kokemusta kerännyt oululainen Machina on levy-yhtiönsä kaatumisen jäljiltä päätynyt julkaisemaan Hellbound Heart -pitkäsoittonsa omakustanteena. Kun kyse on jo yhtyeen toisesta täyspitkästä levystä, on siltä lupa odottaa paljon. Eikä Machina petä, vaikkei napakymppiin vielä osukaan.
Musiikillisesti kyse on melko melodisesta ja kasarilta tuoksuvasta heavy metallista, jota on mausteeksi taitettu aivan hippusen verran perinteisen powermetallin suuntaan, ja jonka kevyehkö tuotantotyyli muistuttaa suomalaisia kevyesti progehtavia hevibändejä. Pääosassa ovat selvästi melodiat, erityisesti lauletut sellaiset, ja Hellbound Heart toimiikin sillä saralla varsin hyvin. 35-minuuttisena se jaksaa vieläpä kertakuuntelulla kantaa koko kestonsa ilman välitöntä kyllästymisen vaaraa.
Tuotannolliset arvot ovat kohdallaan: rumpujen ja basson luoma alataajuusperustus on genrekarsinan huomioiden niin jykevä, että levy oikeastaan vaatii soittoa oikeiden kaiuttimien läpi, ja halpiskuulokkeet kannattaa unohtaa heti kättelyssä. Kun toisena painopisteenä on selvästi ollut se melodinen puoli, erityisesti laulu, jäävät komppikitarat aivan aavistuksen verran jalkoihin. Mutta se ei Machinan tapauksessa haittaa. Bändin tavoitteena on ollut tehdä kasarivaikutteista melodista heviä, ja siinä se on onnistunut; Hellbound Heartin ei ole tarkoituskaan olla mikään riffijuna, eikä komppikepittelyn keveys siksi ole ongelma. Tuotanto on raskaampaa kuin mitä 80-luvulla yleensä saatiin aikaan, eikä kyse muutenkaan ole pastissista vaan positiivisista vaikutteista. Erityisesti lead-kitarointi maistuu usein hyvinkin miellyttävästi 80-luvun loppupuolen tuotoksilta, ja sekaan ripoteltu koskettimien Hammond-soundi on kuin 70-luvun lopun Deep Purplen kiekoilta.
Kun soittokin on teknisesti taidokasta ja riffit kontekstissaan varsin toimivia, ei mitään periaatteellista valittamisen aihetta löydy. Machina on tehnyt ihan hyvän ja ammattimaisen oloisen melodisen hevilevyn. Mutta jotenkin se ei kuitenkaan jaksa kiivetä aivan riittävän korkealle päätyäkseen mihinkään voimasoittoon, vaikka kaikki palikat ovatkin periaatteessa kohdallaan. Yksilöinä biisit ovat hyviä, kokonaisuus on tasapainossa, ja musiikki toimii... ja silti plattaa ei oikein jaksa kuunnella kovin montaa kertaa peräkkäin. Jossain vaiheessa pieni tylsistyminen iskee, onneksi tosin vasta muutaman toiston jälkeen. Musiikki jotenkin hiipuu ja muuttuu ajan ja toistojen myötä harmittomaksi taustamusiikiksi, toisaalta sytyttämättä, mutta toisaalta pahemmin ärsyttämättäkään.
Kyllä Hellbound Heart ilman muuta suomalaisella hevikentällä reippaasti keskimääräistä parempi omakustanne on, ja jääpä muutama laulumelodia ja riffi soimaan mieleenkin jokaisen kuuntelukerran jäljiltä. Mutta se ei kuitenkaan ole aivan niin tarttuva ja koukuttava kuin mitä sen erinomainen tekninen toteutus antaisi odottaa. On aika vaikea mennä sanomaan mikä Machinan musiikista puuttuu, joten kaipa kyse on juuri siitä kuuluisasta "siitä jostakin" jonka löytymistä on jäätävä vielä odottamaan.
Eeppisen huimaa kyytiä tai maata mullistavaa neroutta ei Machinalta kannata vielä tällä kiekolla odottaa, mutta Hellbound Heartia voi silti joka tapauksessa varauksetta suositella melodisen hevin ystäville, sen verran hyvästä perussuorituksesta on kyse.

“All Those Memories…”: from the very start we seem to go into a very techno meets Power Metal kind of vibe when it comes to the song itself, though when the vocals kick in we see that there are other things we cannot afford to miss when hearing what these guys bring to the table and that ladies and gentlemen is a combination between sounds and scapes making something that is simply epic yet very well made at the same time. When it comes to the song's choruses we see that there are some very intriguing ideas that are being played through making this one of the record's better songs and making the listen somewhat ideal for Progressive Metal fans as well as Power Metal fans. I would say as there are a lot of things that this seems to show off.
“The Mirror Black”: with this song we see the band take on a more up and front take on what they have already done so far bringing a ballad-like sound, as well as an epic adventure-type vibe for this song and its structure. In a way, this is one of the songs which takes a slower yet better-made trip into the listener's emotional areas of the mind. When listening to this track it reminds me of BLIND GUARDIAN in a lot of ways by the way the song progresses with an acoustic to high voltage riff style, which to me really makes me smile seeing a band that can take that grasp in their song writing. From every section we can see that there are some very unique ways of presenting this song to the fans as it does a lot more than you would think when hearing it and that is why I think the modern age Power Metal fan would appreciate it and the way it has been portrayed, I just really love how this song goes and need to say congrats to the guys in the band for this masterpiece.
“The Lost Aeon”: the start of this track starts off slow but very darkly melodic giving the song a sinister tale sort of vibe whih is always great to see as it makes the song somewhat a story for the fans to hear and heed before it kicks in to full gear, to which it does very well. It builds up higher and higher. In a lot of ways there is a folk element which can be heard from this track as if it is a song of long ago reimagining what had happened long ago. This in my opinion is one of the more memorable tracks that this record presents as it holds down some very distinct riffs and melodies which really pull at the heart strings.
“Second Coming”: A fast and very well made opening is what you will find when listening to this track as it has some very powerful and incredibly beautiful riffs among the rest of what this record has already shown as with this song, things get really serious and so unreal that it beomes what only comes to mind as a really prog type idea mixed with fantasy. So in a way Prog fantasy, Progtasy, I dunno, I tried. Either way this really gets deep down into the structure and the fom of what this record is about which means to show that there is a bit of everything on this record for a lot of people of all sorts of music preference
“Pretender's Sacrifice”: We have seen how the band have been able to portray their art of music so far and this song really kicks it into overdrive with some really hyperactive riffs and bass lines swinging about and making things so much more than we have heard so far. As we have found out, there are a lot of surpises that we cannot afford to miss as with this song it is taken back to basics with tones and ideas that match that to the old vanguard of sonic tones and siren screams which really make this song a high powered treat to any guitar nerds and vocal adventurers. To say its a good song is only to say that it is by far one of the more classic-toned tracks on this record but either way it is too good not to listen to.
To conclude, if you love your Metal old and new then this is something for you, either way it is a real treat for any person young or old.

"Hellbound Heart" ist das zweite Album der finnischen Band MACHINA. Sie spielen melodischen Heavy Metal, der von den 80ern inspiriert ist, gelegentlich aber auch auf moderne Elemente zurückgreift. Eine große Rolle im Soundbild übernehmen dabei straighte, einprägsame Hooklines, die sich schön in den Gehörgängen festsetzen. Und der melodische Aufbau mündet in der Regel in einen eingängigen, sorgsam ausgearbeiteten Höhepunkt. Wie ich es von finnischen Vertretern dieser Spielart gewohnt bin, machen auch MACHINA dabei im Großen und Ganzen eine gute Figur. Ein paar Mal wünsche ich mir einen Ticken mehr Dynamik, aber von der melodisch-harmonischen Marschroute, die auch einige emotionale Aspekte berücksichtigt, wird nicht abgewichen. Dafür wird der geneigte Hörer mit Melodien konfrontiert, die gut ins Ohr gehen und sich dennoch nicht schnell abnutzen.
Das gewisse Songwriting-Händchen für das Genre kann man MACHINA nicht absprechen. Und es wird über die gesamte Albumdistanz ein konstantes Niveau gehalten, sodass persönliche Favoriten sehr wahrscheinlich von individuellen Vorlieben abhängen. Mir gefallen "Sign Of The World", "Second Comming" und "Pillar Of The Sun" am besten, jedoch bevorzuge ich es ganz klar, lieber das ganze Werk zu hören. Das nimmt dann auch nicht so viel Zeit in Anspruch, da "Hellbound Heart" nach nur 35 Minuten Spielzeit bereits zum Ende kommt. Aber letztendlich ist das sogar eine kluge Maßnahme, da die ultimative Abwechslung eben ausbleibt. Über diese etwas mehr als halbe Stunde darf man schönem, melodischem Heavy Metal folgen, welchen MACHINA auch handwerklich professionell in Szene setzen.
"Hellbound Heart" ist ein gelungenes Werk des melodischen Heavy Metal und MACHINA eine weitere finnische Band, deren Schaffen Anhänger der Spielart unbedingt weiterverfolgen sollten. Erhältlich ist das Werk voerst nur über die Band-Website.

This is the second album from Finnish band Machina, who have CDs that make them look like some kind of groove band, but are actually a straight up heavy Metal Band with some real promise. Now, this is not a great album, but it shows a band who could go places. Their major problem, unsurprisingly, is production. Theirs is not bad, but it is not mixed right to capitalize on their sound. They are doing a power/hard rock thing like Battle Beast, but their mix buries the vocals and amps up the guitars way out of proportion. If they want to get the big pop-hook choruses, they need more punch behind the vocals, and even when they go for a big chorus and the guitars are just providing backup, they have the guitars turned up so loud you can't hear anything else. Normally I am all in favor of louder guitars, but in this case their mix lacks any kind of sensitivity to the songwriting, and it tramples all over what they are trying to do. Passable.
